Choosing the Right Squash String
Understanding a few key details will help you find the perfect match for your game. It’s far less complicated than assembling furniture, we promise.
String Gauge (Thickness)
Gauge refers to the string's diameter, and it's a trade-off between feel and durability.
- 18 Gauge (Thinner): Provides maximum power and "bite" on the ball for better feel and spin. The trade-off is that it's the least durable.
- 17 Gauge (Standard): The most common option, offering a great all-around blend of power, control, and durability.
- 16 Gauge (Thicker): Delivers the most durability and control, making it ideal for frequent string-breakers. It has a slightly stiffer feel.
Material & Construction
Nearly all high-performance squash strings today are a multifilament construction. They are made from thousands of tiny fibers wrapped together and often coated with polyurethane (PU). This design provides excellent comfort, feel, and power, making it ideal for the demands of the game.
String Tensions
Tension is how tightly the strings are pulled. If you're unsure where to start, stringing your racquet at a medium tension (around 26-28 lbs) is a fantastic baseline for balanced performance.
- Lower Tension (24-26 lbs): Creates a "trampoline" effect, generating more power but offering slightly less control.
- Higher Tension (27-29 lbs): Flattens the string bed for enhanced control and feedback, ideal for precise shot-making.
